Photographer Ross Mantle
I was excited to have license to shake up Brooklyn Botanic Garden's popular annual calendar. My first step was to rethink the Garden's precedent for shrink-wrapping the calendar to steer the product towards a more sustainable path. I sourced 100% PCW chipboard, then die cut slots for product insertion and for hanging store displays. To add flair to a potentially drab material, I letter-pressed the barcode, url, and other key info into the foot of the board. This sturdy backing was sufficient to protect the calendar from damage incurred either in the mail or in the store.
My second move was to utilize the incredible hive of young creative talent in Brooklyn. I strategically recruited Ross Mantle, a Brooklyn-based photographer with a journalistic, art-photo approach. His shots of the Garden are ethereal and hard to locate, resulting in a satisfyingly unfamiliar collection of shots of a beloved and ordinarily highly recognizable institution. See all the gorgeous photos on Ross's site.
